The Nervous System, Psychosomatics, & Yoga

One of the reasons I was drawn to yoga in the first place was the realization that the body holds far more than muscles and bones. The body also holds experiences, emotions, stress, and trauma. Over time, I have become especially interested in the relationship between the nervous system and the rest of the body—particularly how the state of the nervous system can influence muscular tension and range of motion.

Range of motion is often discussed in terms of flexibility or muscle length. But in reality, it is deeply influenced by how safe or threatened the nervous system feels. As a yoga teacher, my goal is to become trauma-informed and to emphasize practices that help students learn how to regulate their nervous systems. In my classes, I hope to guide students toward practices that allow stress and trauma to move through the body rather than becoming stored within it.

Understanding the relationship between the nervous system and movement has become one of the most meaningful areas of anatomy for me—especially as I plan to pursue an education in psychosomatic integrative therapy.

Understanding the Nervous System

The nervous system is the body’s communication network. It primarily consists of two major parts:

  • The central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord

  • The peripheral nervous system, which connects the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body

One important branch of the peripheral nervous system is the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary bodily functions such as heart rate, digestion, breathing, and stress responses.

The autonomic nervous system is divided into two branches:

  • The sympathetic nervous system, which activates the body’s fight-or-flight response

  • The parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes rest, recovery, and healing.

These systems are constantly working together to maintain balance within the body.


The Nervous System and Range of Motion

The state of the nervous system directly influences muscular tone and, therefore, range of motion.

When the sympathetic nervous system is activated due to stress or perceived threat, muscles tend to contract and tighten in order to protect the body. This protective tension can reduce joint mobility and limit how far a muscle can safely lengthen.

From a neurological perspective, the brain is constantly monitoring the body for safety. If the nervous system perceives danger or instability, it will restrict movement to prevent injury. This means that flexibility and mobility are not purely mechanical processes—they are also neurological ones.

In other words, the brain ultimately determines how much movement the body will allow.


Trauma, Stress, and the Body

Research in neuroscience supports the idea that muscular tension and movement patterns are strongly influenced by the nervous system.

Trauma researcher Bessel van der Kolk explains that chronic stress and traumatic experiences can lead to long-term dysregulation in the nervous system. This dysregulation often manifests physically as tightness, chronic pain, or restricted movement. Over time, these responses can become ingrained patterns within the body.

Because of this, limited range of motion may not simply be caused by short muscles—it may be the result of a nervous system maintaining protective tension.


Psychosomatics: The Mind–Body Connection

This understanding connects closely to the concept of psychosomatic illness.

Psychosomatic conditions occur when psychological stress or emotional experiences manifest as physical symptoms within the body. Chronic stress can contribute to a variety of physical conditions, including:

  • muscle pain

  • digestive issues

  • fatigue

  • chronic tension

Research suggests that yoga and breath-based practices can help regulate the autonomic nervous system and reduce stress-related symptoms.

When individuals learn how to regulate their nervous systems, the body can often begin releasing long-held tension patterns, which may improve both mobility and overall health.

It could even be argued that all disease contains some psychosomatic component, since the body and mind are deeply interconnected systems that continuously influence one another.

This perspective aligns closely with one of yoga’s central philosophical ideas: union. The word yoga itself comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning “to yoke” or “to unite.” Yoga teaches that the body and mind are not separate entities but expressions of a unified whole.

When we recognize this interconnectedness, practices that regulate the nervous system—such as breathwork, mindful movement, and somatic awareness—can support the body’s natural capacity to restore balance.


Yoga as Nervous System Regulation

This is where yoga becomes a powerful practical tool.

In my classes, students can expect to learn that flexibility is not the ultimate goal of yoga. Instead, the goal is awareness and nervous system regulation.

Practices such as slow movement, breath awareness, and mindful attention can signal safety to the nervous system. When the body begins to feel safe, muscles often soften naturally.

Rather than forcing a stretch or pushing deeper into a pose, students may find that their range of motion gradually improves simply by slowing down the breath and allowing the body to release tension at its own pace.


Every Body Is Different

This perspective can be especially helpful for students who feel discouraged because they believe they are “not flexible enough” for yoga.

Understanding anatomy reminds us that every body is different. Bone structure, muscular patterns, nervous system regulation, and past injuries—both physical and psychological—can all influence range of motion.

While anatomy discussions often focus on how certain occupations affect the body—such as office workers sitting for long hours or athletes repeating the same movements—the relationship between the nervous system and movement applies to everyone.

Regardless of occupation, every person experiences stress, emotional challenges, and physical patterns that influence how the nervous system communicates with the body.

Because of this, practices that support nervous system regulation through breath, mindful movement, and awareness can benefit people in any profession or lifestyle.

Yoga then becomes less about achieving a perfect pose and more about developing a compassionate relationship with the body and mind.


Why Nervous System Education Matters for Yoga Teachers

For yoga teachers, understanding anatomy is essential for guiding students safely and responsibly.

Knowing how joints move, how muscles support movement, and how the nervous system influences muscular tension helps instructors provide appropriate modifications and cues for each individual student.

It also allows teachers to recognize when a student may need to ease back rather than push deeper into a posture.

Knowledge of the nervous system can also help teachers create classroom environments that support regulation rather than performance. Gentle pacing, breathwork, and somatic awareness can encourage the nervous system to shift into a more balanced state.

When this happens, students often experience not only increased mobility but also a deeper sense of calm and connection within their bodies.


Yoga as a Bridge Between Body and Mind

Ultimately, understanding anatomy deepens the yoga practice.

When students learn that their bodies are intelligent systems influenced by the nervous system, they begin to approach movement with curiosity instead of judgment.

As someone who hopes to continue studying psychosomatic therapy, I see yoga as a bridge between physical anatomy and emotional well-being. By teaching students about the nervous system and how it affects movement, I hope to create classes that support both physical mobility and nervous system healing.
